What is a Tea Party?

Posted on by Elizabeth

What is a tea party? This British tradition, also known as afternoon tea, is a gathering for a small meal, along with tea (or coffee). Tea parties are conventionally characterized by bone china, or porcelain, with a beautiful table setting.

The tea or coffee is often accompanied by a plethora of finger foods, like cucumber sandwiches, cookies, biscuits, or scones. Think dainty foods that won’t be too messy for your guests.

I love to imagine Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, relaxing as she sips her tea in her grand tearoom. That would be an amazing setting. But really it doesn’t have to be so fancy.

As long as your guests can tell you’ve made an effort to do something special, I think you’re on the right track.

History

Though tea itself was introduced to England in the 17th century, the tradition of the tea party was born two decades later. In 1840, Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, found herself becoming hungry around four o’clock every day.

Her household’s evening meal was usually served fairly late, and so between lunch and dinner, she began asking for a small meal. She requested that tea, bread and butter, and cake be brought to her in the early afternoon.

She soon began asking friends to join her, and this habit of hers became known as tea time, spawning the idea of the tea party.

Today’s Tea Party

Today, a proper English tea party usually presents with a three-tiered cake stand, displaying finger sandwiches, cookies, cake, and scones. The table is usually laid out with a linen or lace table cloth, along with sugar, milk, lemon slices, and cream.

Often teacups match the plates, but not always. Some people put little name cards and party favors on the table.  Traditionally, one would dress up and wear gloves and a hat.

The main attraction of a tea party is, of course, a perfect cup of English tea. Taylors, Tetley, or Harney & Sons are some favorites.

Conclusion

A proper English tea party is a long-standing British tradition. Groups of friends gather around for tea and finger sandwiches, as well as cakes. Proper manners are required as you enjoy your relaxing afternoon with a good cuppa.
