With so many options, it’s easy to get curious about all of the flavor options out there. Here’s everything you need to know to kick start the boba tea flavor hunt
In this article you'll find:
What is the Best Boba Flavor
In general, Boba tea refers to tea made with plain black or green tea and milk along with sweetened black tapioca pearls that just make the drink so much fun! The best part about boba tees is you don’t have to be loyal to a specific flavor. The different strong taste of these teas entices many people to keep switching up the flavors and experiment with newer ones. Basically, don’t feel bad for wanting to try them all lol!! Some of the most popular flavors include:
Taro Flavor
Taro-flavored boba tea tastes sweet and more like vanilla. Although taro is a starchy root like potatoes, this flavor isn’t potato-ish at all – just delicious. This can be made by taro puree, power, or perhaps chunks.
Brown Sugar Flavor
Brown sugar boba teas are one of the classics that have enticed people to get into boba teas in the first place. I mean brow sugar is amazing so this one probably isn’t that surprising. The tea is made using brown sugar and the favorite tapioca soaked in brown sugar for maximum richness.
Strawberry Boba Tea
Strawberry boba tea is simple and one of the tastiest you can find out there. Since strawberries come up in the spring, this flavor always reminds me of that time of year. You can make your own strawberry boba tea by following the steps below:
What you’ll need:
- 8 tea Ceylon black tea bags
- 4 cups of water
- 1/2 cup half-and-half cream
- 3 cup strawberries or any other fruit of your choice
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar tapioca pearls (optional)
What to do:
- Brew 8 tea bags in 4 cups of boiling water for around 5 minutes. Remember not to over steep your tea bags; over steeping can make the tea bitter
- Let the water cool
- Add brewed tea, half and half and strawberries to blender and blend till creamy.
- Add tapioca pearls and enjoy.
Mango Boba Tea
Mango boba tea doesn’t require you to add tea bags of any sort. Just a little mango puree or frozen mangoes along with 2 cups of tapioca pearls can go a long way to give you the ever-needed freshness from a glass of tea.
Passionfruit
Passionfruit is actually one of the most underrated boba tea flavors of all time.
What you’ll need:
- 1 Black Tea Filter Bag
- Passion Fruit Syrup
- Cooked Tapioca pearls
- 1 gallon of water
- Ice
What to do:
- Boil 1 gallon of water
- Turn off heat and add a Black Tea bag
- Cover pot with a lid and steep for 12 minutes
- Add 8 oz of sugar syrup and 12 oz of passionfruit Syrup into the pitcher with the brewed Black Tea.
- Drop-in some ice and cooked Tapioca Pearls into a glass
- Voila!
Best Bubble Tea Flavor Combinations
So, those are some of my favorite recipes, but you can actually spice things up and incorporate other mouth-watering items into your basic boba teas.
Honey Lemon Green Tea with Boba: honey and lemon tea give the ever-needed burst of sweetness and tanginess that’ll make your taste buds sing. It’s smooth, creamy and not to indulgent.
Matcha Milk Tea with Crystal Agar: Boba tea with matcha gives an earthy taste to the overall drink. Although this isn’t the healthiest option out there, a treat now and then is always nice.
The Chewy Option: Your boba tea doesn’t necessarily have to revolve around plain bubble tea. You can opt for other chewy options by tossing in some boba, jellies, leaving the fruit chunky when blending, or adding other toppings to the mix.
Best Boba Milk Tea Flavors
Black Milk Tea
You can find endless flavors out there. The black milk tea flavor takes the lead with its simplicity, taste, and how easy it is to make. For this, all you need is any black tea from your local supermarket, say Lipton black tea, and some sweetened condensed milk.
Just boil water and add in 2 tea bags in a mug. Let your tea bags sit in for 1 to 2 minutes to steep. Next you add condensed milk and sugar until it’s the sweetness you prefer.
Thai Milk Tea
Another flavor you can try is Thai milk tea that is very quick and easy to make at home. Depending on how much time you are willing to devote to making your tea, you can follow two ways to make this incredible tea.
a) Buy Thai milk tea powder from your local supermarket, follow the instructions, add in your milk, and top it off with any sweetener to enhance the taste.
b) Make it from scratch. Although this involves relatively more work than the powdered one, having complete control over the recipe’s ingredients has some serious benefits. To make from scratch brew black tea, add in some tamarind powder, cinnamon sticks, vanilla extract and some star anise. You can also incorporate fresh fruits to give an overall fruity boost to your Thai Milk tea.
Chocolate
Chocolate boba milk teas are one of my personal favorites. The foamy texture of chocolate fills your mouth with happiness and deliciousness that’s second to none – as chocolate tends to always do. If you’ve been craving something chocolate, I’d experiment a little and go for a chocolate boba milk tea rather than a traditional chocolate cake or brownie.
Honeydew Milk Tea
Honeydew Milk tea is refreshing and perfect even in the peak of summer. This tea is likely to be the favorite of people who have a slightly sweet tooth or just a fan of honeydew melons. The delicious beverage can be made with either the honeydew powder or fresh honeydew.
The recipe of Honeydew milk tea is relatively similar to the one mentioned above. If you’re willing to go for the powder option, follow the Thai Milk tea method and use honeydew ingredients to personalize the taste of this mouth-watering drink fully.
Green Milk Tea
Just like the classic recipe with black tea, this is for people who prefer green tea over black tea. You can indulge in various types of green milk teas like Oolong Milk Tea and Matcha Milk Tea that are ideal for anyone who prefers to have healthier options in their diet.
Best Bubble Tea Flavor for Beginners
If you are a newbie to bubble teas, I’ve got your back!
Considering how you don’t know much about bubble teas, start with the basics that can get you a rough idea of the options available out there. The Ceylon black tea and green tea could be the first step to help you find your way to your go-to bubble tea. Once you have managed to ace that, know you have laid your foundation for determining your desired taste.
Next you can try variations with different kinds of. You can go for mango, raspberry, peach, passionfruit, or strawberry boba teas using either the fresh fruit puree or fruit syrups and powders.
You can then mix it with milk – cow, almond, cashew – or even sweetened condensed milk; whatever sounds good to you, and add other spices and/or sweeteners to completely make it your own.
Here are some key things to keep in mind before making your first bubble tea:
- Make sure to brew your tea bags in water for 2 to 3 minutes before adding milk. This enhances the taste of the tea without leaving it too long to get bitter.
- Always mix honey in the hot water before adding milk or ice. Honey is very tricky to dissolve in cold/cool drinks.
If you happen to become a boba tea fan (which is highly likely), make sure you always opt for wide reusable straws instead of plastic ones to do your part of the work for the environment.
Conclusion
It’s really all a matter of personal taste, but strawberry and brown sugar are my personal favorites. It might take a few tries before you find “the one” boba tea you’ll call your favorite, but until then, experiment with different flavors every time you make one for yourself. You might even find you have favorites for different moods or times of the year.
Enjoy!
